I'd like to offer a few words of praise for Steven Moffat. I've always enjoyed his writing - Coupling and Joking Apart are fine, fine things, and I'd love him to write something for the theatre.
He's getting a bit of a rough edge from a lot of fandom, but I think he's doing a lot right - and of course, we don't know *why* we've had short seasons, it can't just be Sherlock. His villains, his dialogue, his Doctor... between him and Matt Smith, I'm loving the Eleventh Doctor when I never thought I could.
I question his support of praising and re-using Chris Chibnall (but everyone's loving Broadchurch, so what do I know?) and some of his re-designs haven't been as good as they could have been, but overall I prefer his approach to the character of the Doctor and companion roles.
I was largely supportive of the RTD years until the last couple - I thought it imploded somewhat, so I'm enjoying Who more now - but I know this is a controversial opinion!

I like him. He makes it very difficult sometimes, but I do like him. Definitely a more skilled and subtle writer than RTD. And his ability to make you terrified of hitherto innocuous things is impressive. He can't write women for shit though. His female protagonists all have very similar voices - compare early Amy with River, Clara (especially in her Oswin incarnation) and even Irene Adler in Sherlock. The Moff certainly has a type.

Nem - Type? You mean drop dead gorgeous and sharp as mustard? Takes one to know one. I wonder if Lady Christina of Planet of the Dead is Russell T Davies's conscious attempt at a Moffat style fantasy girl? Curious to know what you thought of Madame Kovarian? Does that make a difference?

Good point about Lady Christina! She was deeply irritating though - Moff's women are yawningly similar but there's usually something likeable about them (other than their shapely bits, Mr Admin ). Kovarian was different, but then she was an out-and-out villain. And Frances Barber chewing the scenery could never be a bad thing. Ooh, hang on though - I forgot Vastra and Jenny! They're ace. I want a spinoff, or a graphic novel or something.

Some of Moffat's Doctor Whos have been among my favourites - The Empty Child / Blink / Silence In The Library, but perhaps writing when someone else is in charge is easier.
I'm in love with Clara, but that might be as much Jenna Louise Coleman as the character - at any rate, thanks for giving her to us Moff!
Re. short seasons - well, we've got a mini season of 8 episodes now, which at 45 mins each, is just under the equivalent of 16 classic episodes. Which is four more episodes than we got each year during the Sylvester McCoy years.
I'm old enough to remember when all sitcoms, dramas etc. in the UK lasted only 6 episodes a series. American imports have rather spoilt us. I'll take a mini-series as long as its mostly good. And of late, I've enjoyed DW more than I've hated it.
